What is LMS?
  • LMS expands as Learning Management System
  • It’s an advanced e-Learning application that runs in a company’s intranet or the internet
  • Can cater to all corporate/professional training needs of an organization
4
Standards adopted
  • LMS has been developed on an international learning system standard called SCORM
  • SCORM – Shareable Course Object Reference Model
  • This has been developed by ADLNET.ORG, pioneers in online learning technologies
5
Components of an LMS
  • The Course Material in the form of HTML files, Picture files placed in to a SCORM compliant zip file
  • The platform or the framework i.e the LMS on which the course files run
6
Technologies Used
  • LMS is a Web based portal and so can run on any machine with just a browser
  • The LMS has been developed on the latest Microsoft .NET platform
  • ASP.NET and C# are the computer languages in which it has been developed
  • Using such advanced technologies have evolved the LMS into a sturdy, efficient and a portable application
7
How is it different from e-Learning systems?
  • e-Learning systems are not developed on any standards
  • e-Learning systems are not generically developed
  • They do not provide for superior management of the web application
  • Progress tracking is also not available in most of these systems
8
Advantages of LMS…
  • An LMS developed on SCORM standards can run any course that is developed on the same standard.
  • Thus, any vendor who develops course materials on this standard can provide us with the required course material
  • The system is totally modularised (uses Microsoft Web User Controls) enabling easy plugging in and plugging out of modules
  • Role based system. Modules can be shown/hidden based on the logged in person
  • Portal Admin, Admin, Instuctor, Student are the various roles a LMS user can take
  • Chapter wise progress is tracked and reports are provided to the instructor/administrator
